Money is the household topic most likely to turn into an argument, and the one people most avoid setting up systems for. That combination is not a coincidence.
Agree what's shared before what's split
Most disputes aren't about proportions, they're about scope. Is the streaming subscription shared? The dog's insurance? Deciding what counts as household spending removes most of the friction before any numbers come up.
Visibility is not the same as access
Adults sharing a home often need to see a shared budget without exposing every personal account. Not everyone in a household should see the finances at all — teenagers, flatmates, a visiting parent. Access should be something you grant deliberately, per person.
Review on a schedule, not on a trigger
If the only time you discuss money is when something has gone wrong, every conversation starts adversarial. A standing monthly check on the same day turns it into admin, which is what it should have been all along.
